From Outdated to Outstanding: Real Kitchen Remodels by First State Building & Design

Every kitchen has a story — how it served the family that lived there, how it evolved over time, and how one day, it became ready for a transformation. At First State Building & Design, we help homeowners bring new life to the spaces they use most. This week, we’re sharing three of our favorite before-and-after kitchen remodels across Pennsylvania and Delaware. Each project reflects a unique vision, a fresh approach to modern living, and the timeless craftsmanship FSBD is known for.

Whether you’re looking to brighten a dark layout, open a boxed-in space, or blend classic warmth with modern convenience, these real projects show just how impactful a well-planned kitchen remodel can be.

Project 1: Transitional-Style Kitchen | Garnet Valley, PA | Delaware County

From boxed-in and dated → to bright, open, and beautifully transitional

BeforeModern kitchen with white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, dark wood island with built-in microwave, marble countertops, and a vase of purple flowers under pendant lights. Hardwood floor and arched doorway in the background.

Before

The homeowners described their original kitchen as “tired and boxed in.” Heavy oak cabinetry, a bulky soffit, dated granite counters, and a cooktop placed awkwardly on the island made the space feel dense and disconnected. Although it had served their family well, it no longer reflected their style or how they lived day-to-day.

After

We reimagined this kitchen to bring in light, warmth, and timeless style. The first transformational change was relocating the cooktop from the island to a new professional-grade range along the back wall. This single move immediately improved workflow and allowed the island to serve as a true gathering and prep space.

The old cabinets were replaced with custom white shaker cabinetry, brightening every corner of the room. In contrast, the new espresso-stained island grounds the design with richness and depth, paired beautifully with brushed brass hardware. Removing the soffit opened the ceiling, allowing for a more spacious feel, while elegant brass pendant lights above the island add soft, welcoming illumination.

Sleek quartz countertops and natural stone backsplash replaced the busy granite, creating a clean, refined palette. Every finish — from flooring upgrades to appliance selections — was chosen to balance sophistication with everyday comfort.

Today, this kitchen feels completely reborn: open, airy, warm, and effortlessly elegant.

Project 2: Modern Transitional Kitchen | Garnet Valley, PA | Delaware County

From dark and dated → to fresh, refined, and beautifully balanced

BeforeModern kitchen with white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, a black range hood, marble countertops, pendant lighting, and light gray cushioned bar stools around a large island. Open shelves display decorative dishes.

Before

The original kitchen felt “dark and dated” with honey-toned cabinets, speckled countertops, and a narrow workspace. Though the layout worked, the space felt small and disconnected from the flow of the home. The homeowners envisioned a kitchen that felt brighter, more open, and refined — something that blended contemporary elements with timeless character.

After

To open the space visually and create a lighter atmosphere, we replaced the existing cabinetry with custom white shaker cabinets. A charcoal-colored island adds contrast and dimension — a modern but grounded focal point.

The countertops were upgraded to beautifully veined granite, adding natural movement and a layer of understated luxury. A geometric tile backsplash provides depth and texture while reflecting light throughout the space.

Open shelving gives the homeowners a spot to showcase personal pieces and creates visual openness. Brass hardware and pendant lighting bring warmth and soft elegance to the crisp cabinetry, creating a cohesive, transitional feel.

What was once dim and traditional is now an airy, modern transitional kitchen with the ideal balance of function, beauty, and everyday comfort.

Project 3: Classic Transitional Kitchen | Wilmington, DE | New Castle County

From dark, disconnected, and confined → to open, bright, and beautifully timeless

BeforeBright, modern kitchen with white cabinets, a wooden island, brass pendant lights, hardwood floors, and large windows bringing in natural light. A landscape painting hangs above the counter on the right wall.

Before

This kitchen was described as “dark, dated, and disconnected.” Heavy wood tones, tile flooring, and upper cabinets made the space feel closed in. The cramped layout and small island left little room for entertaining or family gatherings. The homeowners dreamed of a warm, open kitchen that blended classic charm with modern function.

After

We started by opening the layout, removing walls, and extending the kitchen’s footprint. The transformation was dramatic — suddenly the entire space felt larger, brighter, and more connected.

Warm hardwood flooring replaced the old tile, bringing continuity and natural texture. Custom white shaker cabinetry creates a clean, bright foundation, while a natural wood island adds personality and warmth. Brushed brass hardware and geometric pendants bring a refined, timeless glow.

A wall of built-in cabinetry adds much-needed storage, while a charming desk nook offers a functional space for work or homework. The integrated range hood, paneled appliances, and soft white quartz countertops keep the design seamlessly elevated.

Now, the kitchen feels like the true heart of the home — open, inviting, and thoughtfully designed for modern living.
